Short answer: Mihon is what Tachiyomi became. Same core team lineage, same library and backup format, same extension idea — but Mihon is maintained (v0.21.2, October 2026) and Tachiyomi stopped at v0.15.3 in January 2024. Switch if your device runs Android 8.0+; stay (for now) only if you are on Android 6/7 or a specific extension still only works in the legacy app — and keep a backup either way.
| Tachiyomi | Mihon | |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Discontinued Jan 2024 (final v0.15.3) | Actively developed (v0.21.2, Oct 2026) |
| Minimum Android | 6.0 (API 23) | 8.0 (API 26) |
| Extensions | Manual third-party repos; format frozen in 2024 | External repos/stores; new tachiyomix format since 0.20 |
| Backups | Creates .tachibk | Restores .tachibk — 0.21.x is the last line that does so directly |
| Trackers | MAL and others of its era | 9 built-in: MangaBaka, MAL, AniList, Kitsu, MangaUpdates, Shikimori, Bangumi, Hikka, Comick |
| Updates & fixes | None, ever | Regular releases; 0.21.1/0.21.2 fixed real upgrade bugs |
The case for switching
Every month, more sources change something — a domain, a layout, an anti-bot check — and a frozen 2024 app cannot adapt. Extensions written for the modern format target Mihon and its forks. The migration itself is painless while 0.21.x is current: back up, install, restore (step-by-step). The Mihon team’s warning is explicit that this direct path narrows after 0.21.x, so “later” has a real cost.
The case for staying (narrow, but real)
- Your device runs Android 6/7: current Mihon cannot install. Tachiyomi still runs — keep it, keep backups, and plan around a future device change.
- A legacy extension you depend on: rare in 2026, since repositories moved on — but if one source only works in the old app, running both side by side is legitimate; they do not conflict.
Verdict
For roughly everyone on Android 8.0+, Mihon is the right default in 2026 and Tachiyomi is a museum piece — respected, documented (see our legacy download page), and finished. Download Mihon from GitHub via our Mihon page, and read how it stacks up against its own forks in Mihon vs TachiyomiSY.
