Buying guides and legal reading: legal manga apps, tablets and e-ink readers for manga, VPNs, cloud backup, importing from Japan, and courses.
Short answer: manga reading is one of the lightest things a phone does — Mihon runs happily on modest hardware (it just needs Android 8.0+, which every current phone clears). Spend your budget on a large, bright screen, 128 GB+ storage (or microSD), and battery, not on processor speed. The picks below are Amazon searches…
Short answer: the two skills manga readers actually stick with are Japanese (so you can read series that have no translation) and drawing (so you can make your own). Short, project-based online courses beat textbooks for both — the sponsored Domestika courses below are the format that fits a reader’s schedule: a few hours, a…
Short answer: for Japanese editions that are never exported — tankōbon volumes, complete box sets, art books and limited editions — ordering from Japan is the way, and CDJapan is the beginner-friendly store for it: English site, international shipping, and a points program. Budget for shipping and possible customs on top of the cover price….
Short answer: your reading history lives in a small .tachibk backup file and, separately, in your downloaded chapter files. Keep dated copies of both off the phone: the .tachibk in cloud storage you control, and big download folders backed up like any other important files. A phone replacement then becomes a restore, not a loss….
Short answer: a VPN is not required to use Mihon or Tachiyomi, and it will not fix most source errors. It genuinely helps in three situations: reading on public Wi-Fi (school, café, airport), when your home IP has been flagged by a source or Cloudflare, and when an official manga app or series is restricted…
Short answer: if you read manga for hours, an Android e-ink reader (the BOOX line is the established name) is the best screen for it: paper-like, glare-free, sips battery — and because it runs Android, it can install Mihon like any tablet. Choose 7.8″ for portability or 10.3″ for page-size reading. BOOX has no direct…
Short answer: buy screen, not specs. A 10–11 inch tablet with a bright, high-resolution display and microSD expansion is the manga sweet spot — big enough for double-page spreads, light enough for one hand. Any current Android tablet runs Mihon (it needs Android 8.0+), so choose by display size, weight and storage. Links below go…
Short answer: the best legal manga app depends on what you read. MANGA Plus (Shueisha) is the standout free option — new chapters at the same time as Japan. VIZ / Shonen Jump is the best-value subscription for Jump back catalog. BookWalker is for buying volumes to own. Azuki and Manga UP! round out subscription…
